Abandoned Glasgow train tunnel pix

Craig sez, "I'd like to show-off some photographs I took in an abandoned train tunnel underneath Glasgow's botanic gardens. The reason I think it's newsworthy is that it's the easiest bit of urban exploring anyone is likely to do: it's one minute off the beaten path, no security and the gates blocking the way are handily bent." Far be it from me to spread rumors, but there's a certain school in Glasgow that *might* have an infamous ghost tour as part of freshers' week that *sometimes* walks by this tunnel. In past years, some members of the tour have, on their own volition, gone into the tunnel and had a really great and spooky time and taken lots of cool pictures. Since no school in Glasgow would support a dangerous activity like this that involves trespassing, there's certainly no reason to suspect that the next ghost tour, in just a couple weeks, would do anything to encourage students to visit the tunnel again. I only know this because I am definitely not one of the guides who started the ghost tour.

Glasgow tunnel parties are one of the city's less talked about delights - several hundred people, a generator, sound system and bar

And coincidentally, the Guardian ran a story only a couple of days ago about the station in the botanic gardens on top of the tunnel:

Two onion-domed towers rose above a steep pitched roof of red tiles, flanked by two tall Jacobean chimneys and twin gables in black-and-white half-timbering, as though Ivan the Terrible had invaded Surrey.

But the whole thing burned down in 1970 - now somebody is offering to rebuild it at a price the locals may not want to pay.

Wow, that's a real nostalgiafest. Around 1970, me and a friend spent most of the summer exploring these tunnels. You could walk for miles right under the centre of Glasgow. I read recently that the botanic gardens station may be converted to a nightclub, cutting off another bit of the tunnel system.

I also have some pictures of the tunnel that I would like to share.

When we went down there were shadows in the distance moving towards us. It turned out to be a dad and his young kids doing a bit of U.E.
