Many BoingBoing readers have sent in word of a "hidden" flight simulation feature in Google Earth that's making the blog-rounds. TechCrunch has a post on how to use it here. (thanks Chris and others)
A flight simulator hidden in your software? That's so Excel 97. Seriously, though. Google is to Microsoft as a youthful Microsoft was to IBM. How long before Google is forced to drop all easters eggs at the behest of corporate customers concerned with security, performance and stability? How long before Google becomes the new slumbering giant fighting to keep its products innovative yet compatible?
It's nice but the terrain is pretty blurry from caching / streaming issues when you're going full bore in the f-16. The best places to fly otherwise are with terrain variance. England is a bore - but Switzerland and Monument Valley are pretty fun.
FYI, Alt-(Cursorkeys) moves the virtual head off the HUD view, in case you feel like looking somewhere else than straight ahead during your flight. Didn't see that mentioned anywhere yet.
This is not a fake. I just took a quick flight. The only thing that's left for them is to combine this with is google space. Please choose your space craft, Millenium Falcon or Starship Enterprise. Peace out nerds!
Google Earth rocks on many levels, and this will just add more fun to using for those who love flight simulators. Neat!

I recognise the graphics (backdrop, cockpit style etc) from a PS1 game. Fake.
