From the BMan website:
At approximately 2:58 local time, 8/28/07, a fire ignited the Burning Man figure and the center Green Man Pavilion at the Burning Man event in Black Rock City, Nevada.

Black Rock City Emergency Services Department units responded from Stations Three, Five, and Nine and put the fire out within approximately 23 minutes. There were no reported injuries. The Man is still standing, and an assesment is underway to determine the structural integrity of The Man and the Green Man Pavillion. The event will continue as scheduled.

An arson investigation is currently under way, and is ongoing. There is no confirmed cause of ignition at this time.

No further information is available at this time. More information will be released tomorrow morning after the investigation can safely be concluded.

Man, imagine reporting it to the cops.

"Officer, they set fire to the Burning Man!"

"They burned the... burning thing?"

"The Man! It was burned!"

"Er... isn't that what you wanted?"

#23 posted by Anonymous , August 28, 2007 10:23 AM:

The Man exists in their hearts.

At the last minute you could build a tiny man out of Dixie cups and marshmallows -- and the inner emotions of the playa throng would invest it with just as much significance.

#30 posted by Anonymous , August 28, 2007 10:58 AM:

probably some old-school burner mad at the way Burning Man has been going lately.

I can't believe this finally happened! Several years ago, someone showed me a pack of matches that had BURN THE MAN EARLY printed on the cover. I thought it would be a great idea, to provide and alternate end to an "alternative" festival!

As is said, "If you meet the Buddha on the road, kill him."

It looks like they are going to scrap the one they have and build a new one. That is the sort of thinking that get my fires burning, so to speak. I'm really interested in seeing what they come up with.

I wonder if this is in any way connected to the fact that BMORG invited green businesses on-site to demo their wares. Is this the first example of "terrorism" at BM, or just one of the many random acts of art vandalism?

Not at all. It's really quite hilarious.

#41 posted by Anonymous , August 28, 2007 12:35 PM:

Wait they put out the fire. Why? So they can burn it all over again later this week? WOW! Ironicish

#42 posted by Anonymous , August 28, 2007 1:01 PM:

At one point, this would have really been considered another type of art by those who attend. It's always been about chaos, unpredictability and randomness--and about playing off each-others art to make something greater.

Now people are just going to whine because some might have missed the big event. Probably something about concession sales dropping or the like.

The fact that people are so bent out of shape by this really indicates something about the current state of the event.

This Chronicle article says Paul Addis of San Francisco was arrested in connection to the burning:

This older article says that Paul Addis has been linked from Boing Boing before:

(Includes picture.) Not sure if they're the same guy, but the gonzoduke.com domain linked from that post is registered in Oakland, CA, so it's possible.

Having him burn for the lunar eclipse seems somehow very appropriate in a pagan celebration kind of way.
