Jane Jacobs's Death and Life of the Great American Cities is a book that will forever change how you see human habitation, community and endeavor. It's one of those books you need to read to be a literate, 21st-century human. Jacobs fell in love with Toronto -- my hometown -- and devoted a lot of great critical thought to the city.
