Update: Here's the proprietor of ReviewMe IMming to Consumerist's Meghann Marco:
patrickgavinTLA: hey meghan its Patrick Gavin from ReviewMe/Text-Link-Ads
Meghann Marco: Hi there.
patrickgavinTLA: just left a comment on your post
patrickgavinTLA: my apologies
patrickgavinTLA: basically we had a loophole where publishers could
submit a site that was not theirs
Meghann Marco: I see.
patrickgavinTLA: it got listed but no advertiser money was taken bc a
review would have to have been completed on the said site
patrickgavinTLA: again it was stupid on our part a mistake but not
malicious
patrickgavinTLA: we are fixing it as we speak and again sorry for the
confusion
Meghann Marco: Can you explain why money was taken for a review on
Lifehacker?
patrickgavinTLA: yes
patrickgavinTLA: money is not taken at checkout, an advertiser's
credit card is pre approved
patrickgavinTLA: it is only charged on completed reviews that we have
to approve
patrickgavinTLA: so i am assuming that was the case with that one,
that the advertiser did go through checkout, their card was pre
approved, but then the review was never completed obviously
patrickgavinTLA: as it would have had to be completed on lifehacker
Meghann Marco: Ok, that makes sense. Would it be ok to post from this
chat?
patrickgavinTLA: definitely and thx for listening
Meghann Marco: No problem. Thanks for the information. We appreciate it.
patrickgavinTLA: cool thx if you ever need me direct my email is
pgavin@text-link-ads.com
Meghann Marco: Great. Thanks so much.
Update 2: Patrick Gavin writes
Hey Cory, we also run ReviewMe.com and want to apologize for our mistake. I also chatted with Meghann over at the Consumerist explaining the error. Basically we had a loop hole where folks who are not the owner of a specific blog could submit that blog into our marketplace. This bug is being fixed as I write this.As far as folks buying reviews off these fraudulent sites they will not be charged. This is how the process works at ReviewMe….
An advertiser purchases a review off a listed blog. The completed cart just pre approves the advertiser’s card but does not charge it. A charge only occurs when the completed review is submitted into our system and to be approved that review must be located on a url from the matching listing in our marketplace which is of course impossible if you are not the owner of the blog. So yes the advertiser tried to purchase a review off a Gawker site, their card was pre approved, the review was never completed, so their card was not charged.
So we made a mistake and I apologize for that. We are fixing the mistake and it should never come up again. Thx for your understanding.
