New data on safety of sex toys containing pthalates
Cory Silverberg, About.com's "Sexuality" editor, tells BoingBoing:
You've probably caught the story about Greenpeace UK calling on EU leaders to ban phthalates in sex toys but in case you haven't been sent this, the Udansk blog (which is written by an epidemiologist who doesn't really work in a lab with these materials but isFleshbot (link to post) and Violet Blue (link to post) also have more on the subject. (thanks, also, Baptiste)Dutch[Ed. note: correction, the blogger, whose name it Laust, is Danish] and interested in the topic) posted a quick and dirty translation of a report from the Danish Environmental Protection Agency on phathalates in sex toys (the report is only available in Danish). The results:* moderate use of dildoes (less than 15 min/week) is not associated with any significant health risk* heavy usage (1 hour/day) is not associated with any significant health risk, except for pregnant and breastfeeding women who should abstain from heavy usage
His blog post (which has more details) is here.
My blog post linking to the Greenpeace report is here.
